Bibby Marine starts Mozambique charter to support global demand for clean energy

Bibby Marine is playing an important role in helping meet the world’s increasing demand for sustainable, reliable and cleaner energy sources, after being contracted to provide accommodation for the construction workers of the Mozambique1 Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) site.

Bibby Marine specialise in hotel quality floating accommodation facilities for workers (known as flotels) offering flexible shoreside temporary living environments.

Historically these have supported large infrastructure projects as well as government and charity needs.

The Bibby Marine team reacted quickly to the opportunity, adapting their model to provide assistance in a new part of the world.

Stephen Bolton, Commercial and Business Development Director at Bibby Marine, said

“The Bibby Marine accommodation barge fleet has often supported LNG projects around the globe, hence it’s great to return to support this exciting sector and support the MOZ LNG facility indirectly.

“We know our client will be able to utilise the Bibby Challenge platform to provide safe secure high quality accommodation to hundreds of construction workers contributing to this exciting project.

“The Bibby Challenge, like the rest of the Bibby Marine floating accommodation fleet, offers an unrivalled level of readily deployable near shore accommodation given facilities such as bedrooms with individual bathroom facilities and TV systems, relaxation rooms, gym and catering facilities .“

The project, which will be operated by Total once complete, started with the discovery of a large quantity of natural gas just off the coast of northern Mozambique in 2010 and is on track to deliver LNG in 2024.

Economic benefits of the project include developing competent construction and operation workforces; developing subject matter experts that support those industries and generating revenue that will contribute to the socio-economic development of the country.

Initially the Bibby Challenge will be chartered for 12 months, which started in November 2020, with the possibility of a 6 month extension.
